What Our Car and Bike Transport Covers

Everyday cars, family wagons and utes, moved between cities or across town. We’ll explain how your car travels when we quote.

Road bikes, cruisers and high-performance motorcycles, strapped down properly so they don’t move on the trip.

A restored vintage car or a project you’ve spent years on needs extra care. Tell us about the vehicle when you ask for a quote, and we’ll plan around it. Large items that won’t fit in a car.

Heavy, fragile and valuable pieces get extra wrapping and crew.

Bought something big on Trade Me or from a trade supplier? We can collect it and deliver it to your door.

Lease gap or fit-out running late? We store your furniture until the space is ready, and the first week is free. See our storage services.

Moving house or office? Book your car or bike with the rest of your move.

Drive It Yourself or Have It Transported?

Driving your own car to a new city isn’t always the cheapest or easiest option. Here’s how they compare.

What to compare Drive it yourself Car transport
Your time A full day or more behind the wheel Fly or drive another car, and meet it there
Wear on the vehicle Hundreds of extra kilometres No kilometres added
Fuel and stops Fuel, food and possibly a night's accommodation Included in your quote
Two vehicles Two drivers needed Both can be transported
Classic or unregistered vehicles May not be road legal or reliable for a long drive Moved without driving it
Moving house at the same time Hard to manage both One company, one plan

When People Use Car and Bike Transport

Here are some common reasons people book vehicle transport instead of driving.

  • Moving to a new city for work. You fly to start the new job, and the car follows with your furniture.
  • Students heading south. A first year at university in Dunedin often means a car full of gear and a long drive. Sending the car means one less thing to worry about.
  • Holiday homes. Moving a second car or a motorbike to a bach in Wanaka, Queenstown or Hanmer Springs.
  • Buying or selling a vehicle out of town. Bought a car or bike on Trade Me in another city? We can collect it from the seller and bring it home.
  • Two-car households. One partner drives, and the second car is transported, so nobody spends two days on the road.

Car and Bike Transport Routes

We transport vehicles from Christchurch across Canterbury and the South Island, including Ashburton, Dunedin, Queenstown, Wanaka, Nelson, Blenheim and the West Coast. With an office in Hamilton too, we can also talk to you about moves between Christchurch and the Waikato.

Moving to one of these places? See our Queenstown movers, movers and packers in Nelson, and our guide to intercity movers in the South Island.

How to Prepare Your Car for Transport

A bit of preparation protects your car and avoids delays on pickup day.

  1. Wash it and take photos. Photograph every side, the roof and the interior, and note any existing scratches or dents. Write down the odometer reading.
  2. Empty it out. Take out personal items, loose objects, toll tags and anything valuable. Things left in the car can move around and cause damage.
  3. Leave about a quarter tank. Enough to load and unload, without the extra weight of a full tank.
  4. Check for leaks. Let us know about any fluid leaks before pickup.
  5. Fold in mirrors and remove accessories. Roof racks, bike racks and aerials that come off should be taken off.
  6. Disable the alarm. Or tell us how to turn it off if it goes off.
  7. Hand over the keys. Give us one set of keys, and keep a spare with you.

How to Prepare Your Motorbike for Transport

  1. Photograph it from both sides and note any existing marks.
  2. Remove loose items like panniers, top boxes and GPS units, or tell us they’re staying on.
  3. Check the tyres and battery so the bike can be wheeled on and off safely.
  4. Lock the steering and hand over one set of keys.
  5. Tell us about any modifications, like low exhausts or custom fairings, so we can secure it properly.

Paperwork to Sort Before and After the Move

Transport doesn’t need your car to be driven, but you’ll want it road legal when it arrives.

  • Registration and WoF. Check they’re current, so you can drive the car as soon as it’s unloaded.
  • Change of address. Update your address with Waka Kotahi for your licence and vehicle registration once you’ve moved.
  • Insurance. Tell your insurer your new address, and check your cover while the vehicle is in transit.
  • Keys and documents. Keep spare keys, the registration papers and any service records with you, not in the car.
